Back in my twenties, when I was a Troop Commander in the Marines, I would find myself switching from one approach to the other. One moment trying to be nice and friendly to my team of 30 people and the next moment simply telling them what to do.
Result – my team didn’t respect me very much and we only got average results.
I felt at times like a failure - that I should have known better. I knew that things weren’t working, but I didn’t know what to do to fix them.
Fortunately, after a few year of frustration, I met a couple of great mentors who showed me alternative ways of leading and things improved dramatically. They taught me a few simple lessons that changed the way I thought about leadership forever and as a team we really started performing.
As a direct result of using what I had learned, I found myself being promoted to a new and exciting position – this time leading even bigger operations in different countries.
What I had learned was confirmed and built upon by my experiences as a client team leader when I was a management consultant. I remember how tough things got for me trying to motivate diverse teams of people in different locations each with different agendas and priorities. I felt like I was back at leadership square one all over again.
But again, I was lucky enough to get some great coaching from some highly experienced and capable managers. This helped me push beyond my own comfort zone to try some new things out with my teams. And great results happened.
I remember the time I was leading a change process on one of the world’s largest agricultural estates in Indonesia where our team ended up increasing production by over 30 % as a result of the team’s hard work and combined efforts.
Was it easy? No. Did it happen overnight? No. Did I still doubt myself from time to time? Yes. Did it take me reinventing who I was and how I lead others? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely.
So here’s what I took away from those and many other experiences too.

All the most sophisticated leadership and management theories are a total waste of time if you are not very self-aware.
All of the greatest performers in the world will not work as a team with you if you do not know intimately what makes you and all of them tick.
All of the best management tools and techniques will simply not work unless you are conscious of your own programming.
When you know what drives you to behave in the ways that you do – you will then know what will motivate your team members.
When you know how to manage your own fear and anxiety – then you’ll be able to know what to do to help your team members manage their own fears and anxiety.
When you have developed your own internal strength, confidence and direction you will then be able to support your team members to develop their own strength, confidence and direction too.
When you know these things – then truly amazing Results will show up for you and for your team.
Then people will follow you. NOT BEFORE.
2) Learn lots of TESTED techniques that WORK and APPLY THEM YOURSELF IMMEDIATELY with your TEAM
So here's the thing...
I am sure you have read at least a few management books. You have also probably attended at least one or two management or leadership trainings.
My question to you is…How much of what you read or heard did you actually apply? And over the long-term – how much of what you heard actually changed the way you lead or managed your people.
Probably not much.
Most of us learn about how to lead from our first few leaders and managers we had. And then we just use those same methods over and over again.
Of course there are many more ways of leading and managing than your first few managers knew – and much bigger results than they used to get.

Etc, etc, you get my point.
Most managers don’t try doing things differently and therefore don’t get new results.
They even avoid getting any feedback at all about how they are doing - because they are scared.
And therefore don’t learn and grow.
Please don’t be one of those managers…please don’t be scared about doing new things.
Your team, your organisation and your clients need you to do new things – to always be learning and growing.
You Must Know Where You’re Going
If you don’t have the kind of success you want with your Team, then you’re not doing these three steps. I know that.
